Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. It shapes first impressions and your approach to new situations. To find it you need your birth date, exact birth time and birthplace. Enter them above for an instant, free result with no sign-up.
Example reading
Input: Born 2 September 2001, 06:45, Chicago, USA
Result: Rising sign Virgo (about 15 degrees). The Sun is also in Virgo, so this person's outer style and core identity line up: tidy, observant and a little reserved at first. Others probably see someone capable and well prepared. The Moon sits in Pisces, which adds the softer inner layer that close friends discover only over time. If the clock had read 09:45 instead, the Ascendant would already have moved on to Libra, which shows why exact birth time matters.
What your rising sign is
Picture the horizon at your birthplace at the second you were born. The zodiac sign crossing the eastern edge of the sky was rising, and that sign is your Ascendant. It also marks the start of the first house in your chart.
In reading, the Rising sign is the front door of your personality. It describes your body language, your instinctive way of meeting strangers and the style you bring to new projects. Many people say friends describe their Rising sign more than their Sun sign.
It also sets the whole house layout of your chart. When the Ascendant changes, every house cusp shifts, which is why two people born on the same day can have very different charts.

Why exact birth time matters
The Earth turns once in about 24 hours, so every zodiac sign rises over the horizon once a day. On average each sign takes around two hours, though signs near the horizon at high latitudes can take less or more time. A birth time that is off by 30 minutes can move your Ascendant by several degrees, and an error of two hours can change the sign entirely.
That is the reason a date alone cannot give a rising sign. Two babies born on the same day in the same city but a few hours apart can have completely different Ascendants.
- Check your birth certificate first; many include the minute.
- Hospital records and baby books often list the time too.
- If your time is rounded, such as 3:00 p.m. exactly, test a window of an hour either side.
- Be cautious with any result computed for 12:00 noon as a default; it is only a placeholder.
Why birthplace and time zone also matter
Your rising sign depends on where on Earth you were born, because latitude and longitude set your horizon. Someone born at noon in Boston and someone born at noon in Singapore will have different Ascendants.
Local clock time is not the same as the astronomical moment. Daylight saving and time zone rules have changed many times in the last century. TarotDew uses a city search with historical time zones, so it turns your local birth time into universal time using the rules that were in force on that date and in that place.
Under the hood the chart engine is the open-source astronomy-engine library, accurate to well under one degree for planet positions. Houses are Placidus, the most widely used system, so your Ascendant also anchors the house cusps you see in your full chart.
What to do with your rising sign
- Read your Ascendant description in the table, then ask a friend how they first saw you.
- Compare it with your Sun and Moon sign; the three together make up the Big Three.
- Open your full birth chart to see which house each planet falls into from your Ascendant.
- Look for the sign ruling your Ascendant, since its position shows where your approach to life tends to lead.
A rising sign is a lens for reflection rather than a prediction. TarotDew offers it for entertainment and self-reflection, and not as medical, legal, financial or mental-health advice.

Frequently asked questions
What is a rising sign?
Your rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the time and place you were born. It describes the style you present to others and often shapes how people first perceive you.
Can I find my rising sign with only my birth date?
No. Because the Ascendant moves through all twelve signs in about 24 hours, you need your birth time as well as your birthplace. Without the time, the result would be a guess, and TarotDew asks for the time and place for that reason.
How accurate does my birth time need to be?
Within about 15 to 30 minutes is usually enough to place the Ascendant in the right sign, unless you were born near a sign boundary. If your time is approximate, try a window around it and see whether the sign stays the same.
What is the difference between rising sign and sun sign?
Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun occupied on your birthday and reflects core identity. Your rising sign depends on birth time and place and reflects outward style and first impressions. The two can match, but they are often different.
Why is my rising sign different on another website?
Common causes are a different birth time, a wrong time zone or daylight saving setting, or a different birthplace. TarotDew uses historical time zones to convert your local time correctly. Double-check the time and city on both sites.
Does my rising sign change over time?
No. It is fixed by your birth moment, so it never changes in your natal chart. What does change is how you express it as you grow, and the transits that touch your Ascendant during life.
