Example reading
Input: Born 2 June 1995, 07:40, Chicago
Result: Sun in Gemini in the 12th house, Moon in Libra, Rising in Cancer. The Gemini Sun gives a curious, talkative core; the 12th-house placement suggests much of that thinking happens in private. A Libra Moon wants harmony and fairness, and a Cancer Ascendant meets the world with warmth and some caution. Venus square Saturn hints at taking love slowly and seriously.
Natal chart vs birth chart
They are the same thing. "Natal" comes from the Latin word for birth, and astrologers use both names for the chart cast for your birth moment. Some people also say horoscope chart or radix. Whatever you call it, the calculation is the same: the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets seen from your birthplace at your birth time.
If you want the longer guide to every part of the chart, the birth chart calculator page covers each planet and house in more depth. This page focuses on reading your natal chart quickly.
What you need to make a natal chart
- Birth date: gives the sign of the Sun and every planet.
- Birth time: gives your Rising sign, Midheaven and houses. The Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes, so a time from a birth certificate is best.
- Birth city: gives latitude, longitude and the time zone that was in force on that day, including daylight saving.
No birth time? You still get every planet's sign and the aspects. TarotDew uses noon and tells you which parts depend on the time, such as the Moon if it changed sign that day.
How to read your natal chart in five steps
- Start with the Big Three: Sun (core self), Moon (emotional needs) and Rising (how you meet the world).
- Read the personal planets next: Mercury for thinking, Venus for love and taste, Mars for drive.
- Look at the houses: each planet's house shows the area of life where its energy plays out, such as work, home or relationships.
- Check the tightest aspects: aspects with small orbs, especially to the Sun, Moon or Rising, are the strongest themes.
- Notice the balance: many planets in one element or one half of the wheel shows where your attention naturally goes.
The parts of the wheel
| Part | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Signs (outer ring) | The style of each planet, such as fiery Aries or careful Virgo |
| Houses (12 slices) | Areas of life, from self (1st) to the hidden and spiritual (12th) |
| Ascendant (left horizon) | Your Rising sign and the start of the 1st house |
| Midheaven (top) | Public image, career direction and reputation |
| Aspect lines (centre) | Angles between planets: easy (sextile, trine) or tense (square, opposition) |
A note on accuracy and meaning
The positions are astronomy: TarotDew computes them from the same planetary models used in astronomy software, and they match professional ephemerides to well under a degree. The meanings are astrology, a symbolic language for self-reflection, not a science. Use your chart as a mirror and a conversation starter, not a verdict.
Frequently asked questions
Is a natal chart the same as a birth chart?
Yes. Natal chart and birth chart are two names for the same map of the sky at your birth moment. The calculation and the reading are identical.
Can I make a natal chart without a birth time?
Yes. You get every planet's sign and the aspects between them. Without a time the Rising sign, Midheaven and houses can't be known, and the Moon may be uncertain on days it changes sign.
Is this natal chart calculator free?
Yes. The natal chart is free and unlimited, with no sign-up and no ads. An optional one-time PDF deep-dive report is available if you want a longer written reading.
Which house system does TarotDew use?
Placidus, the most widely used house system in modern Western astrology. Each planet is shown with its sign and its Placidus house.
Is my birth data stored?
No. The free chart is calculated in your browser, so your birth date, time and place are not sent to a server unless you choose to share a link to the chart.
How accurate is the chart?
Planet positions come from the open-source astronomy-engine library and are accurate to well under 1°. The biggest source of error is usually the birth time, so use the most exact time you have.
