Tarot Birth Card Calculator

Enter your date of birth to find the Major Arcana cards tied to your birthday, with the arithmetic shown.

In short

Your tarot birth card comes from adding the digits of your full birth date and reducing the total to a Major Arcana number from 1 to 22. Most birthdays give a pair: a personality card and a soul card (for example 12 The Hanged Man and 3 The Empress). Some give a single card, and a few give three. The calculator shows each step, links to the full meaning of every card, and runs in your browser.

Key facts
  • Free and instant, with no sign-up.
  • Uses the Mary K. Greer method: add the full date, reduce to 22 or below, then to a single digit.
  • Shows every step of the arithmetic so you can check it.
  • Returns one, two or three Major Arcana cards.
  • Each card links to its full upright and reversed meaning.
  • Your birthday stays in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

Example reading

Input: Born July 15, 1990

The Hierophant

Result: 7 + 15 + 1990 = 2012, and 2 + 0 + 1 + 2 = 5. The birth card is 5, The Hierophant, on its own: a person drawn to learning, teaching and shared values. A single-card birthday means the personality and soul card are the same, so this theme runs through your life very directly.

How to find your tarot birth card

  1. Add the month, day and full year of your birth, e.g. 7 + 15 + 1990 = 2012.
  2. Add the digits of that total: 2 + 0 + 1 + 2 = 5.
  3. If the result is 22 or less, that is your first birth card. If it is higher, add its digits again.
  4. Keep reducing a two-digit result (10–22) to one digit to get the second card, e.g. 12 → 1 + 2 = 3.
  5. Look up both cards: the higher number is often read as the personality card and the single digit as the soul card.

Birth card pairs

Because the reduction always ends on a single digit, every birth card pair shares a root number from 1 to 9. These are the pairs you can get:

RootPossible cardsShared theme
119 The Sun · 10 Wheel of Fortune · 1 The MagicianWill, self-starting, visibility
220 Judgement · 11 Justice · 2 The High PriestessIntuition, fairness, inner knowing
321 The World · 12 The Hanged Man · 3 The EmpressCreativity, growth, new perspective
422 The Fool · 13 Death · 4 The EmperorStructure, change, fresh starts
514 Temperance · 5 The HierophantLearning, balance, values
615 The Devil · 6 The LoversChoice, desire, relationships
716 The Tower · 7 The ChariotDrive, breakthroughs, direction
817 The Star · 8 StrengthCourage, hope, resilience
918 The Moon · 9 The HermitReflection, intuition, solitude

22 is read as The Fool (card 0). Some readers start with 10 The Wheel and 1 The Magician for the root 1 group only when the total lands there directly; the calculator shows exactly which steps your date took.

Personality card vs soul card

In Greer's system the higher card describes how you show up in the world and the lessons you meet along the way, and the single-digit card describes the deeper purpose underneath. If your birthday gives one card, both roles are carried by the same card. Neither card is good or bad: The Devil and The Tower as birth cards point to intensity and growth through honesty, not to bad luck.

What to do with your birth cards

  • Read both full meanings and note which lines feel familiar.
  • Pull your birth card from the deck when you journal about long-term choices.
  • Find this year's theme with the tarot year card calculator.
  • Compare with a friend: shared root numbers often show shared values.

Frequently asked questions

What is my tarot birth card?

It is the Major Arcana card (or pair of cards) you get by adding the digits of your full birth date and reducing the total to 22 or below. Enter your birthday above and the calculator shows the cards and the steps.

What is the difference between a soul card and a personality card?

The personality card is the higher number (10–22) and describes how you meet the world. The soul card is the single digit (1–9) and describes your deeper purpose. If you get only one card, it plays both roles.

Why do I only have one birth card?

If your total reduces straight to a number from 1 to 9, there is no higher card to pair it with, so your birth card stands alone. That is normal and is read as a very direct life theme.

Can I have three birth cards?

Yes. If the first reduction is exactly 19, you get The Sun, then 1 + 9 = 10 The Wheel of Fortune, then 1 + 0 = 1 The Magician.

Is my birth card the same as my zodiac card?

No. Your zodiac card comes from your Sun sign (for example Aries is The Emperor). The birth card comes from numerology of your birth date. You can use both.

Is this calculator free?

Yes. It is free and unlimited, with no sign-up, and your birthday is not sent to a server.
